چکیده

Background Different methods have been proposed to estimate Wall Shear Stress (WSS). Morgan and co-workers (J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg and Ann Biomed Eng 1998) used a finite difference scheme to quantify the WSS tensor. However, it is well known that finite-difference methods cannot effectively handle complex geometries, as those found in the cardiovascular system. To account for arbitrary cross-section shapes, Stalder et al., MRM 2008, used B-spline (BS) interpolations to smoothly describe the lumen contours. In this work, we propose and validate a new method for calculating the WSS distribution based on Finite-Element (FE) interpolations.

3D quantification of wall shear stress using finite-element interpolations from 4D flow MR data in the Thoracic Aorta

Background Actual methods to quantify wall shear stress (WSS) are performed on reformatted 2D planes from 4D flow data sets. This approach has the inherit limitation that only a few planes are analyzed on specific locations of the aorta, even though the full 3D velocity field is usually available. Another problem with this approach is that the process of locating 2D planes manually is dependent...

3D quantification of hemodynamics parameters of pulmonary artery and aorta using finite-element interpolations in 4D flow MR data

Background Several hemodynamic parameters based from 3D cine PC-MRI have been proposed during the last years, including wall shear stress (WSS), oscillatory index (OSI), vorticity and helicity among others. Most of these parameters are quantified using 2D planes, and only few methods have exploited the advantage of using the 3D data. The disadvantage of using 2D planes is that it does not provi...

Advanced Quantitative Flow and Wall Shear Stress Analysis at 3T: 2D Vs 3D Time-Resolved MR Velocity Mapping

Introduction: Time-resolved (CINE) phase contrast (PC) MRI permits the assessment of blood flow within entire 3D vascular structures [1, 2]. The resulting high-dimensional datasets (3 spatial dimensions, 3 velocity directions, and time) require new visualization and quantification methods to derive reliable clinical parameters. In this context, an advanced flow quantification tool was developed...

Quantitative 2D and 3D phase contrast MRI: optimized analysis of blood flow and vessel wall parameters.

Quantification of CINE phase contrast (PC)-MRI data is a challenging task because of the limited spatiotemporal resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The method presented in this work combines B-spline interpolation and Green's theorem to provide optimized quantification of blood flow and vessel wall parameters. The B-spline model provided optimal derivatives of the measured three-directi...
